Red Seal – Grants and How to Receive Them

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

One of the advantages of starting and finishing an apprenticeship in a Red Seal specialty is that you may be eligible for thousands of dollars in government grants or loans. For instance, if you desire to become a Red Seal carpenter but have doubts on how you'll handle the extra fees (such as for decent equipment, work attire, or transportation) that may emerge during your training. You can better manage those financial obligations with an apprenticeship grant or loan.

Canada provides three grants to individuals pursuing a Red Seal:

-The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant: If you manage to complete your apprenticeship program's first or second year (or level of training), you may be eligible for a taxable $1,000 cash grant. You can earn an extra $1,000 if you complete both years (or levels).

-The Apprenticeship Completion Grant: If you completely finish your apprenticeship program and receive journeyman certification in your province or territory, you may be eligible for a $2,000 taxable cash grant.

-Women's Apprenticeship Incentive Grant: If you are a female apprentice in a Red Seal trade where women are underrepresented and have finished your first or second year of training, you may be eligible for a taxable cash grant of $3,000 per year for up to two years.

Along with grants, the federal government provides loans to individuals pursuing specific trades. Registered Red Seal apprentices may be eligible for up to $4,000 in Canada Apprentice Loans per year or duration of training. The loans stay interest-free during your training (for up to six years), and you don't have to make any repayments during that period.
